Govindan clarifies liquor ban applies only to leaders
Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala state secretary MV Govindan clarified that stringent restrictions on alcohol consumption within the party are primarily meant for those in leadership positions. This comes after his statement that members who consume alcohol would be expelled raised concerns among the cadre.Govindan emphasised that while the party discourages alcohol and substance use among its members, achieving complete abstinence is a gradual process. He referred to the 2013 Kolkata plenum, where the CPI(M) articulated its stance against alcohol consumption, aiming for a culture of sobriety within the party.Addressing queries about party members involved in the alcoholic beverages business, Govindan clarified that while the CPI(M) does not oppose members running bar establishments, it expects them to abstain from consuming alcohol themselves.This development follows their ally CPI's recent decision to relax its longstanding ban on alcohol consumption by party members. The CPI now permits moderate drinking, advising members to avoid public intoxication and maintain the party's reputation.
