Varkala Beach featured in Lonely Planet's list of the 100 Best Beaches Worldwide
IN a significant validation of Kerala's vibrant beach tourism scene, Papanasham Beach in Varkala, a breathtaking coastal retreat, has been recognized among the top 100 beaches in the world in the esteemed Lonely Planet guidebook titled ‘Best Beaches: 100 of the World's Most Incredible Beaches’.
Situated in Thiruvananthapuram district, Papanasham Beach, commonly referred to as Varkala Beach, offers captivating views of the Arabian Sea. Its shimmering sands and tranquil atmosphere have established it as a beloved tourist spot.
Lined with swaying coconut palms and blessed with endless azure waters, the beach is renowned as a haven for travellers seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. Spas nestled along the surrounding laterite cliff offer therapeutic experiences, further enhancing its allure.
In addition to its popularity as a tourist destination, Papanasham Beach holds deep religious significance as a revered pilgrimage site. According to Hindu belief, immersing oneself in the waters here can absolve sins (papam), hence the name "Papanasham" for the beach. Furthermore, ashes from cremation grounds are ceremonially immersed in the sea, symbolizing the purification of the soul of the deceased and the attainment of moksha (eternal salvation).
Another peculiarity of the beach is that it is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. This has been recorded as a geological monument by the Geological Survey of India (GSI).
Expressing happiness, Tourism Minister Mr P. A. Mohamed Riyas said, “Featuring on the list of best beaches in the world is a remarkable recognition for Varkala Beach. Lonely Planet travel book has a global readership among travel enthusiasts, and the recognition accorded by it will further reinforce the reputation of the beach as an attractive destination.”
Mr Riyas announced that the government is expediting the destination development project for Varkala, aimed at transforming both the core site and its surrounding areas into a world-class tourism hub.
This comprehensive project encompasses various aspects, including the preservation of the iconic Varkala Cliff, the exploration of alternative transportation methods such as buggies and electric autos for cliff access, the enhancement of infrastructure and safety measures, and a significant reduction in the usage of plastic and other pollutants.
Recognizing the immense potential of Varkala as a tourist hotspot, Mr Riyas inaugurated a floating bridge and several adventure tourism activities at the beach in December last year. The bridge, spanning 100 meters in length and three meters in width, offers a spacious viewing platform capable of accommodating over 100 visitors simultaneously.
The floating bridge is a key element in the beach’s tourism development and marketing strategy that includes promoting adventure sports like parasailing, scuba diving and paragliding.
Kerala Tourism is set to host the International Surfing Festival in Varkala from March 29 to 31. Surfing athletes from overseas and India's east and west coastal cities are expected to participate in various categories throughout the festival.
Mr Riyas expressed, "This event seeks to establish Kerala as the leading surfing destination in India and foster the growth of surfing as a nationwide sport." He added, "The festival also aims to elevate Varkala, Kerala's premier surfing spot, into a globally renowned surfing hotspot."
