PRIME Minister Narensra Modi has become the first Indian to receive Mauritius' highest honour, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.

Mauritius PM Navin Ramgoolam on Tuesday, March 11, announced the country's highest award, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi is the first Indian to receive this prestigious award, which recognises his contributions to strengthening ties between India and Mauritius.

It is also the 21st international award that has been bestowed upon PM Modi by a country. Ramgoolam said PM Modi is the fifth foreign national to receive this distinguished recognition.

PM Ramgoolam emphasized its significance, stating that since Mauritius became a republic, only five foreign dignitaries have received this title.

Among them was the revered South African leader Nelson Mandela, who was honored in 1998.

Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted enthusiastically by the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in Mauritius on Tuesday. As part of the welcome, women from the community paid tribute to him with Geet Gawai, a traditional folk performance from Bihar.

The recognition for PM Modi and the Indian culture underscores the deep-rooted diplomatic and cultural ties between India and Mauritius.

Modi met with Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House, where both leaders engaged in discussions to enhance the special relationship between their nations.

They reflected on historical ties, people-to-people connections, and avenues for future cooperation across various sectors.

Modi also handed over Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to President Gokhool and the First Lady, reaffirming India’s commitment to the Mauritian Indian diaspora, PM India reported.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam planted a sapling at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, reinforcing their shared commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation.
