Congress leader questions CM over lack of access and Hindu Aikya Vedi meeting

The controversy over Chief Minister VD Satheesan's meeting with leaders of the Hindu Aikya Vedi has resurfaced. A Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) leader questioned why party functionaries were allegedly denied appointments while the Hindutva outfit's representatives were received by the Chief Minister.Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson VR Anoop on Thursday, July 16, criticised Satheesan after Kerala Students Union (KSU) state president Aloshious Xavier and KPCC general secretary PM Niyas were allegedly unable to secure appointments with the Chief Minister despite repeated requests. In a Facebook post, Anoop said PM Niyas had sought time to meet the Chief Minister to present his concerns over the alleged Sangh Parivar links of a person appointed as an Election Commissioner but was not granted an appointment. He also claimed that Aloshious Xavier, who had raised complaints regarding the appointment of government pleaders, was yet to be given an opportunity to meet the Chief Minister.Anoop said that if the Chief Minister could extend a "sympathetic approach" to Hindu Aikya Vedi leaders KP Sasikala and RV Babu, the same courtesy should have been shown to the KPCC general secretary and the KSU state president. "They deserve it. It is their right. This is their government too. This is our government too," he wrote. The criticism comes amid an ongoing row within the Congress over the appointment of government pleaders. A section of the party, led by the KSU, had objected to the appointments, alleging that some appointees had links with rival political parties.Responding to the criticism earlier, Satheesan defended the appointments, saying the names were recommended by the state committee of the Indian Lawyers' Congress and the High Court Unit Committee before being finalised after consultations with the Advocate General.Rejecting the KSU's objections, the Chief Minister had remarked, "Does the unit committee of Thiruvananthapuram Law College decide government pleaders?" He also asserted that the KSU had no role in deciding government pleader appointments. The Chief Minister's meeting with Hindu Aikya Vedi leaders on July 10 had already triggered criticism from within and outside the Congress. The delegation included KP Sasikala, Subrahmanyan Mussath, Mohan Triveni, Prof Gopinathan, KV Sivan, Sushikumar, and K Prabhakaran, who met Satheesan during the government's public grievance hearing.Following the backlash, Satheesan defended the meeting, saying, "I did not meet the Hindu Aikya Vedi leaders as Pinarayi Vijayan did. I met them openly. They met me during public visiting hours. I am the Chief Minister of the state, not just of the Congress or the UDF."Hindu Aikya Vedi leader RV Babu later said the delegation met the Chief Minister to submit a representation adopted at a Hindu Leadership Conference. This is not the first time the meeting has drawn political criticism. The Indian National League, the CPI(M), and the National Service Society (NSS) had earlier questioned the Chief Minister's decision to meet the Hindu Aikya Vedi delegation. On June 20, NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair alleged that the Chief Minister had twice declined requests for an appointment from the NSS.The controversy also revived earlier allegations made by RV Babu in March 2026, when he claimed that Satheesan had sought the RSS's support in the 2001 and 2006 Assembly elections after losing to CPI leader P Raju in the 1996 Assembly polls. Satheesan had denied the allegation at the time.

Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh lose the most sleep as nights get hotter

India has emerged as one of the world's hotspots for climate-related sleep loss, with southern states recording the highest disruption as rising nighttime temperatures increasingly erode sleep, according to a new global analysis by Climate Central. The study, which examined 1,338 major cities worldwide, found that climate change has at least doubled temperature-related sleep loss since the early 1970s in nearly every city analysed. Globally, people lost an average of nearly 56 hours of sleep every year between 2020 and 2025 due to high nighttime temperatures, with more than 10% of that loss directly attributed to climate change driven largely by fossil fuel use and deforestation.Within this global picture, southern India has emerged as one of the regions most affected outside the Middle East. Cities across southern India recorded between 78 and 91 hours of annual sleep loss due to high nighttime temperatures, including eight to nine hours directly attributable to climate change. The report identified Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana as India's hotspots for heat-related sleep disruption, noting that persistently hot and humid nights are increasingly reducing sleep while climate change is amplifying these losses across some of the country's hottest regions.Among states and union territories, Puducherry recorded the highest annual sleep loss at 92 hours per person, followed by Andhra Pradesh (88.6 hours) and Kerala (88.3 hours). Tamil Nadu ranked fourth with 84 hours of annual sleep loss but emerged as the state most affected by climate change, with an additional 7.9 hours of sleep lost per person every year because of climate-driven warming. Karnataka followed closely with 72 hours, of which 7.8 hours were climate-attributable sleep loss, while Rajasthan recorded seven hours despite experiencing lower overall sleep loss than the southern coastal states.Kerala, which had four cities included in the analysis, recorded an average annual sleep loss of 88.3 hours per person, of which six hours were linked directly to climate change. The study also found that Maharashtra, represented by 22 cities in the dataset, recorded an average annual sleep loss of 76.3 hours, including 5.8 hours attributable to climate change, suggesting that heat-related sleep disruption is widespread across the state. Uttar Pradesh, despite having 11 cities in the analysis, recorded a comparatively lower climate change signal of 4.9 hours, although residents still lost nearly 69 hours of sleep annually because of high nighttime temperatures.Among India's eight major metropolitan cities, Chennai recorded the highest overall sleep loss, with residents losing an average of 93 hours of sleep annually, including five hours directly attributable to climate change. Mumbai followed with 84 hours and Kolkata with 80 hours, reflecting persistently warm and humid nights.Bengaluru stood out for recording the strongest climate change signal among the country's major metros. Residents lose an additional eight hours of sleep every year because of climate change, accounting for nearly 12% of all temperature-related sleep loss in the city. Hyderabad recorded seven additional climate-driven hours of sleep loss annually, while Ahmedabad and Pune each recorded six hours. Delhi had the lowest overall sleep loss among the eight metros at 66 hours a year but still lost an estimated five hours annually due to climate change. The report warned that high overnight temperatures are becoming a growing public health concern because they prevent the body from cooling and recovering from daytime heat. Poor sleep is associated with impaired cognitive performance, poorer mental health, weakened immunity, cardiovascular diseases, reduced productivity, increased risk of accidents and, over time, higher risks of diabetes, hypertension and premature death. The health burden is expected to be particularly severe in India, where millions live in densely populated cities affected by the urban heat island effect, which traps heat and keeps urban areas warmer after sunset. Older adults, women, infants, pregnant women, low-income households and people without access to adequate cooling are among those most vulnerable to heat-related sleep disruption.Globally, the highest climate change-attributable sleep loss was recorded in cities across the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, where residents lost between 55 and 87 hours of sleep annually, including 12 to 16 hours directly linked to climate change. Southern India and parts of Southeast Asia were identified as the next most affected regions, underscoring the growing impact of warming nights on public health.Calling sleep loss a "hidden but growing consequence" of climate change, Climate Central vice president for science Kristina Dahl said the findings show that the impacts of fossil fuel-driven warming extend beyond extreme weather and are now undermining one of the mos

Follow TNM's WhatsApp channel for news updates and story links. The Kerala High Court on Wednesday, July 15, issued an interim freeze to the Kerala State Waqf Board, directing it not to exercise any major functions, incur capital expenditure, or take policy decisions without the court’s express permission. The court made the intervention after determining that the Board’s current composition prima facie violates the newly enacted Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, 2025. The interim order came while hearing four public interest litigations (PILs) challenging the constitution of the Board following the enactment of the amended law. The UMEED Act mandates that every State Waqf Board include two non-Muslim members and one Shia member. However, the current Kerala Waqf Board has nine members, none of whom belong to the non-Muslim or Shia communities. One of the PILs, filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shone George, sought a direction to the state government to nominate two non-Muslim members to the board in accordance with the Act. Another petition challenged the appointment of KS Hamsa, a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], as the chairperson of the Board.A division bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice VM Syam Kumar observed that the provisions of the UMEED Act must be followed unless stayed or struck down by another court. “In view of the fact that admittedly, two non-Muslim members have not been included in the Waqf Board and also, as urged by some of the writ petitioners that one Shia member should also be included, we hold that the constitution of the Board prima facie appears to be not in conformity with Section 14 of the said Act,” the court said in its interim order, according to LiveLaw. The court also directed the state government to ensure that the government representative serving as an ex officio member of the Board is appointed in accordance with the Act. Until further orders, it said the Board would function under the supervision of the Joint Secretary of the state government department dealing with Waqf matters. The Kerala State Waqf Board is a statutory body established by the Government of Kerala under the Wakf Act, 1995. Its primary purpose is to manage, supervise, and ensure the proper administration of all registered Islamic religious and charitable endowments (Waqf properties) in the state, including mosques, madrassas, orphanages, and graveyards across the state.

New York imposes a one year data center moratorium as concerns grow

No large data centers can be built in New York for up to a year as the state creates rules to protect the environment and its energy grid from the power-hungry facilities fueling artificial intelligence.Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order Tuesday imposing the country's first statewide moratorium on hyperscale data centers, which house thousands of computer servers and require massive amounts of energy and a steady supply of water to keep cool. The move pushes the state into a raging debate over how to regulate the AI industry, as concerns over rising electric bills and environmental risks collide with a desire to stimulate local economies and foster the U.S. tech sector.“The bottom line is that progress shouldn't arrive with a higher utility bill, deleted water supply or noise pollution, so we have no choice but to address these challenges created by these massive facilities,” Hochul said at a celebratory signing ceremony in Brooklyn.President Donald Trump has warned states not to slap regulations on the AI industry, echoing tech companies in arguing such moves hamper job growth and cede ground to China in a race to lead in the rapidly growing field.Earlier this year, Maine seemed poised to establish a similar moratorium. But the measure was vetoed by Democratic Gov. Janet Mills because it would have blocked a proposed data center in a town that has struggled after a mill closed.Moratoriums have been proposed in at least a dozen states but have not gotten far, though some counties and municipalities have imposed their own temporary bans.New York's executive order pauses state permitting for new large data centers and directs state regulators to create standards that address environmental impacts, energy demand, water usage and other factors, the governor’s office said.Dan Diorio of the Data Center Coalition, a trade association, said the moratorium “will ensure that those investments, jobs, and economic activity flow elsewhere rather than to New York — with impacts far beyond the data center industry.”The decision in New York also carries political significance for Hochul's reelection campaign and the state's tight congressional races this fall, as Democrats move to address affordability concerns over high utility bills. In addition, the governor this year softened New York's ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gases, citing rising energy costs for consumers.Hochul’s Republican opponent in the governor’s race, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, opposes a statewide moratorium and says local governments should be allowed to strike deals with tech companies for data center projects that promise enough economic benefits. In a statement Tuesday, Blakeman said the governor “doesn’t work with local governments and business leaders to figure out how to get things done,” while pledging to “modernize our economy to bring costs down and create good jobs.”The state Legislature this year approved its own moratorium bill, but Hochul's office described the legislation as complex and said it needed additional work. Instead, the governor opted for an executive order that would take effect immediately.State Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, a Democrat who sponsored the legislation, joined the governor during the signing ceremony. “If Big Tech is coming onto our turf, it should be on our terms,” she said.New York, at this stage, has not been a destination for the largest hyperscale data centers.

Tehran threatens to halt all Mideast energy exports after US reimposes its blockade on Iran

By Jon GambrellDUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The U.S. military reimposed a naval blockade on Iran and intensified its airstrike campaign early Wednesday, hitting an Iranian army barracks and killing at least seven troops while wounding 260 people across the country, Iranian officials said.Days of retaliatory strikes across the Middle East by Iran and the U.S., and both nations’ attempts to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, threaten to push the region back to all-out war.More than 30 people have been killed over “recent days,” Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said, without elaborating. Seven of the dead came from the attack on the barracks in Iran's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province. The U.S. first imposed the blockade in mid-April and then lifted it in mid-June, a day after signing the interim deal that set a 60-day period for negotiations over issues like Iran’s nuclear program, but talks have stalled as fighting over the strait, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas trade passes during peacetime, has intensified.Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard threatened Wednesday to halt all energy exports from the Middle East over the blockade.“The export of oil and gas from the region will be either for everyone or for no one,” it said. When U.S. President Donald Trump announced the return of the blockade Monday, he also said he would impose a 20% fee on ships passing through the strait. But he dropped the plan to collect fees hours before resuming the blockade, citing requests from allies in the Persian Gulf. Both US and Iran launched attacks as blockade reimposedThe U.S. carried out another wave of strikes as it reimposed the blockade, striking dozens of targets over seven hours, the U.S. military’s Central Command said Wednesday.Hossein Kermanpour, a spokesperson for the Health Ministry, gave Wednesday's casualty figure of over 260 people wounded, without specifying how many people had been killed. Kermanpour's figures reported far more people injured than in any other round of recent violence between Iran and the U.S.One strike targeted a barracks for Iran's 388th Mechanized Infantry Brigade in Bampour in Sistan and Baluchestan province, Iranian state television reported. The report said the Americans fired at least 13 missiles in the attack and that the dead included conscripts and career soldiers. A number of other troops were wounded. The army said it would make “a decisive response to this aggressive action by the American enemy,” state TV added. The 388th operates battle tanks and armored vehicles.Missile alert warnings went out in Bahrain and Kuwait early Wednesday morning as they faced incoming Iranian fire, something that’s been a daily occurrence, further straining a ceasefire in the war. Jordan also said it shot down three incoming Iranian missiles. Iran claimed attacks on the three nations.U.S. Navy Adm. Brad Cooper, who leads Central Command, said in a statement that Iran had launched dozens of missiles and drones at neighboring Gulf Arab countries.“U.S. forces are holding Iran accountable for unwarranted aggression that continues to endanger innocent lives,” Cooper said. When the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Iran on Feb. 28, Tehran effectively shut the Strait of Hormuz by attacking and threatening ships. That sent the price of oil, fertilizer and other goods soaring.Iran has more recently attacked ships moving through the strait on a route near Oman overseen by the U.S. military that is outside Tehran’s control, setting off the recent violence. The U.S. has threatened to reopen the strait by force — but experts say that would require a much bigger armada if not tens of thousands of ground troops.Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, criticized America’s ongoing attacks targeting his country.“The U.S. is the aggressor, not the victim,” he wrote to the world body’s leader, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.Trump says he’s seeking Gulf investments instead of feesTrump said Tuesday that he was called by the region’s “kings and emirs,” who suggested an alternate arrangement to charging ships fees to pass through the strait like the president proposed a day earlier.“They said we’d love to do it a different way. We’d love to invest in the United States with billions and billions of dollars,” Trump told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office.Trump said he preferred that arrangement to charging tolls “because I don’t think anybody should be able to charge a fee for the strait.”It was unclear if the investment deals would be new commitments relative to what Trump announced after a visit last year to the Middle East.Trump’s plan to charge fees would have been a change to longstanding American policy and a departure from U.S. promises that the strait would remain open to all without tolls.Trump told Fox News Channel on Tuesday night that more U.S. strikes against Iran were coming over the next two days and that bri

More grain, less protein behind India’s rising obesity

A decade ago, in March 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi first mentioned obesity in his 18th Mann Ki Baat address. Since then, Modi has spoken about the issue on at least 18 occasions, including during his last Independence Day speech. In roughly the same time, the proportion of India’s men and women, aged between 15 and 49 years, who were overweight or obese increased by about 10 percentage points, according to the sixth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) conducted during 2023-24.Until 2005-06, the survey collected data for men or women aged 15-49 who were ever married (including individuals who were widowed, divorced, separated or deserted). Since 2015-16, it includes all men or women aged 15-49 regardless of marital status.Overall, 30.7% Indian women are now overweight or obese, the survey shows, nearly triple the proportion in 1998-99, when the survey first captured this indicator for women. Among men, 27.3% have a BMI of 25 or higher, again nearly triple the proportion in 2005-06, when the survey first measured the indicator for men.The survey classifies adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher as overweight or obese. Earlier reports also included separate numbers for Indians with BMIs of 30 or higher, classified as obese, but the current factsheet for the latest survey does not separate these measures. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies obesity as a “chronic, relapsing disease arising from complex interactions between genetics, neurobiology, eating behaviours, access to healthy diet, market forces, and the broader environment”. Globally, 43% of adults are now overweight, up from 25% in 1990.In 2021, higher-than-optimal BMI caused an estimated 3.7 million deaths from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, neurological disorders, chronic respiratory diseases, and digestive disorders, the WHO has noted. India’s 2025-26 Economic Survey points to unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles and increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods as contributing factors.A 2020 modelling study projected that the prevalence of overweight among Indian adults could more than double and obesity could triple by 2040. By 2060, India’s economic cost of obesity is projected to rise to $839 billion, third globally after China and the United States, and amounting to 2.47% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to a 2022 report by the World Obesity Federation.IndiaSpend has reached out to the Union health ministry for its response on the rise in overweight and obesity, measures to promote physical activity and healthy diets, and steps being taken to address obesity. This story will be updated when we receive a response.A grain-heavy, protein-poor plateIndia is among the fastest-growing markets for ultra-processed foods globally, with retail sales rising 40-fold from $900 million in 2006 to nearly $38 billion in 2019, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26. The survey noted that during the same period, obesity nearly doubled in both men and women.Changing dietary patterns, consumption of ultra-processed foods, poor dietary diversity and inadequate intake of protein and other nutrients, along with lifestyle changes, have contributed to the increase, experts say.A 2025 study based on the Indian Council of Medical Research - India Diabetes study, published in Nature Medicine, found that Indian diets are characterised by high intake of low-quality carbohydrates, high levels of saturated fat and low intakes of protein. Since the turn of the century, the share of beverages and processed foods increased from 4.2% of monthly expenditure to 9.6% in 2022-23, data from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey show.“India’s diet has become increasingly carbohydrate-heavy, dominated by grains, sugars and ultra-processed foods cooked in refined seed oils, while protein intake remains inadequate. We are overfed in calories but undernourished in nutrients,” said Mrudul Deshpande, a Pune-based functional medicine physician specialising in metabolic health and nutrition, and founder of Change & Evolve.A 2022 study found that Indians’ consumption of industrially processed foods increased between 1990 and 2019, with overweight, obesity and type 2 diabetes expected to continue rising if these trends persist.Another study of upper-middle and high-income adults in Delhi found that ultra-processed foods accounted for 17% of total energy intake, with most participants consuming less than recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables, pulses, milk and nuts.“Nutrition is the backbone of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise, sleep and stress management all matter, but if your diet is a mess, the foundation is weak,” Deshpande told IndiaSpend. “Ultra-processed foods, overconsumption of grains, sugary drinks and industrial seed oils have gradually replaced whole, nutrient-dense foods. Most Indian plates are still grain-centric, with protein treated as a side dish i

Follow TNM’s WhatsApp channel for news updates and story links. The Kerala government will not proceed with the proposed Thiruvananthapuram–Kannur High-Speed Rail corridor until independent studies establish its financial viability, Chief Minister VD Satheesan said on Wednesday, July 15. An expert committee that reviewed the interim report submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) found the Rs 60,000-crore proposal could not be approved in its present form, citing a narrow project framing and the absence of environmental and social impact assessments, Satheesan said while briefing the media after a Cabinet meeting. The high-speed rail project was proposed by Metro Man E Sreedharan as an alternative to the Left Democratic Front government's Silver Line."Taken as a whole, the proposal cannot be approved in its present form," the Chief Minister posted on X, citing the findings of a four-member expert committee headed by the Secretary, Transport (Railways), which also included environment experts. The panel flagged a "narrow project framing" and an "absence of environmental and social impact assessment" in the DMRC submission."As an immediate first stage, our government will ensure that no field surveys, land acquisition notifications, or ground-level preparatory works be undertaken at this point. We will commission independent studies to establish a viable financing model and a broader multimodal growth strategy before progressing to a Detailed Project Report," Chief Minister VD Satheesan posted on X.Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Satheesan said passenger revenue alone would not make the project economically sustainable and that the government would examine additional revenue streams, including freight and logistics movement, before committing further. "The mistakes made in the much-publicised K-Rail project of the previous Left government, which ultimately had to be shelved, would not be repeated," Satheesan said.DMRC's interim report envisages a 473.20-km standard-gauge corridor connecting Poojapura in Thiruvananthapuram to Mundayad in Kannur, largely elevated with a 6.5-km underground stretch within Thiruvananthapuram city. The alignment has 23 stations and is designed for train speeds of up to 200 kmph. The project is estimated to cost Rs 60,000 crore. The UDF government had decided against pursuing the Silver Line, the LDF's semi-high-speed rail project, soon after taking office and appointed Sreedharan's team to draw up an alternative.

After alleged snub by Nair society, Vice President inaugurates Mannam statue in Delhi

Six months after allegedly being denied permission to pay tributes to Nair Service Society (NSS) founder Mannathu Padmanabhan at his final resting place in Kerala, Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan inaugurated his statue in New Delhi on July 12.The statue is located at the Mannam International Centre. The facility is run by the Nair Service Society in Delhi, which shares the name but functions independently of the NSS in Kerala, a dominant caste organisation of Nairs, headquartered in Changanassery.Mannathu Padmanabhan Pillai founded the Nair Service Society in 1914. The organisation has a wide network of local units called karayogams and runs more than hundred schools and several higher education institutions. In February 2026, Radhakrishnan had visited Changanassery for the centenary celebrations of SB College and expressed a wish to offer floral tributes at the Mannam Samadhi. Mannathu Padmanabhan gets his first name from the place Mannam and his final resting place is referred to as Mannam samadhi. The Kerala NSS, led by general secretary G Sukumaran Nair, did not permit the visit. The organisation's stated reason was that bomb-squad dogs accompanying the Vice-President's security detail would enter the premises and defile its sanctity.Speaking at the Delhi event, Radhakrishnan appeared to allude to the earlier episode: "Never think that you are everything, that I am the president, I am the general secretary; so you should not come or he should not come. That should not be our aim." The remark was widely read as a veiled dig at Sukumaran Nair, who has a history of restricting political leaders' access to the Mannam Samadhi to prevent parties from using it to project closeness to the organisation.Union Minister Suresh Gopi, also present at the event, told reporters: "In Perunna, we will move forward boldly with our steps... We need to find an alternative. This is an alternative... Time will act to transform it into an organisation that you desire."MKG Pillai, president of NSS Delhi, said the chapter had planned to install the statue since the centre's inauguration but had been unable to due to funding constraints. "There were several instances in which access was denied to people who wished to pay tributes to Mannam. This place will be open to all," he said.Pillai said the event has no political connotations and they have no connection with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). "None of us are politicians and we maintain good relations with all communities," he said. When asked whether they had help from CV Anandabose to realise the project, he said the foundation stone was laid by the former West Bengal Governor three months ago.The NSS Delhi chapter was formed in 1984 and now represents roughly 25,000 families, according to Pillai. The Mannam International Centre in Dwarka was inaugurated by former President Pranab Mukherjee in 2012.Several public figures have spoken about allegedly being denied access to the Mannam Samadhi and the NSS office in Perunna. In January 2026, CV Anandabose, speaking at a Mannam Jayanthi event organised by NSS Delhi, alleged he too had been refused permission to pay floral tributes at the Samadhi. He proposed installing a memorial to the community leader in Delhi instead, pledging one month's salary toward the project. In 2015, Suresh Gopi said he faced a similar rebuff from Sukumaran Nair while attempting to attend the organisation's budget presentation at NSS headquarters, during a period when he was campaigning for the BJP in the Aruvikkara bye-election.

Harassment: Survivor says delay has taken toll on her wellbeing

More than two months after the Internal Committee of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata found a top official guilty of sexual harassment, he has finally been served a notice to submit his representation. The survivor, a former student and faculty member of the institute, told TNM that she was shocked to learn about the delay after waiting for more than two years for justice. She said the prolonged process had taken a toll on her wellbeing.“It came as a shock to me to learn through the Students’ Union statement that the Chairman of SRFTI, Mr. Suresh Gopi, issued a notice to the guilty official only on 13 July 2026. This action should have been taken two months ago, when the Internal Committee (IC) submitted its final inquiry report in May 2026,” she said. The reason for the delay emerged after SRFTI students held a protest on campus on July 13, marching to the office of Vice Chancellor Samiran Datta. In a statement, the Students’ Union said it had learned that the delay was caused by the chairperson of the institute – actor and Bharatiya Janata Party Minister Suresh Gopi – who gave the approval to send the notice to the guilty official only by July 13. The survivor said this was not the first such delay in the proceedings. “Earlier, when it was the chairperson’s responsibility as the disciplinary authority to issue the charge sheet — a mandatory step to initiate the second stage of the inquiry — it was delayed for several months and was issued only after sustained intervention. As the complainant who has endured this process for over two years, which has impacted my overall well-being, I ask: Why am I being made to wait even after the inquiry has concluded and the Internal Committee has found the official guilty of sexual harassment?” the survivor questioned.Under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, an inquiry into an IC complaint should be completed within 90 days of the complaint, and action must be taken within 60 days of the IC submitting its report. The survivor filed her complaint in May 2024 against the official, who has since been asked to work from home while continuing to receive his salary. Two years later, in May 2026, the IC, after two stages of investigation with the second stage led by an Inquiry Authority, submitted its report, finding the official guilty of sexual harassment and other charges. However, the institute did not take any action after the mandatory 60-day period had passed. When chairperson Suresh Gopi was questioned about the delay, he asked the media if they were above the court. He claimed that the court had given the institute time to proceed legally and that it did not need the permission of the media.

NIA arrests two more accused in Praveen Nettaru murder, BJP asks who shielded them in Kerala

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two more accused who had been absconding in connection with the 2022 murder of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 24.The arrested men have been identified as Abdul Nasir P. and Naushad. Abdul Nasir was taken into custody in Kochi, while Naushad was arrested from Hosur in Tamil Nadu during a coordinated operation carried out on Saturday based on inputs received from the Andhra Pradesh Police, the agency said.According to the NIA, both had already been named in the chargesheet and were booked under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The agency alleged that they had sheltered the main accused involved in the killing of Nettaru, who was a district executive committee member of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Dakshina Kannada. The NIA said lookout circulars and open-dated arrest warrants had been issued against the two by the NIA Special Court in Bengaluru after they went into hiding. A reward of Rs 4 lakh had also been announced for information leading to the arrest of each accused.Following Abdul Nasir's arrest in Kochi, BJP workers staged a small protest in Ernakulam demanding action against those who had allegedly provided shelter to him.Kerala BJP president and Nemom MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar also reacted to the development in a post on X. Referring to Abdul Nasir's arrest, he wrote: "How could a NIA-wanted fugitive live in the heart of Kochi for years without being detected? Who gave him shelter? Who protected him? Is it believable that the State Home Department and Keralam Police had no knowledge of his presence?"In the same post, Rajeev alleged that the CPM and the Congress had pursued "appeasement politics" at the cost of national security and claimed that both parties had enabled extremist networks to function in the state. The parties have not responded to the allegations. The NIA said three accused in the case remain absconding, while efforts are continuing to trace them. It added that rewards have been announced against six accused who are yet to be apprehended. The agency, which took over the investigation from the Karnataka Police in August 2022, said its probe found that the Popular Front of India (PFI) had formed covert groups known as "PFI Service Teams", allegedly trained in surveillance and the use of weapons to carry out targeted killings, including that of Nettaru.Investigators have also alleged that Nettaru was killed in retaliation for the death of a Muslim youth in a road rage incident.Earlier, the NIA had filed a 1,500-page chargesheet before the NIA Special Court in Bengaluru against 20 accused, supported by statements from 240 witnesses. Praveen Nettaru was hacked to death by two motorcycle-borne assailants at Bellare village in Dakshina Kannada district in July 2022.

Follow TNM's WhatsApp channel for news updates and story links. The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR) has registered a case against KT Jaleel, former Minister for Higher Education of Kerala on Monday, July 13, for allegedly humiliating school students in a public function. Jaleel, a four-time MLA had recently joined the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPIM).The suo motu action against Jaleel stemmed from a viral video showing him scolding and pinching the ear of a student on stage at a felicitation event in Mannarkkad in Palakkad district. The event was held to honour high-scoring SSLC Plus Two students. In the video, he asks a student to write in Hindi and later scolds the student for making mistakes. The video also shows him pinching the student's ear, all of this happening on the stage. The video invited widespread criticism, and Muslim Students Federation (MSF), the student wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), demanded an apology.Kerala Minister for Women and Child Development Bindu Krishna strongly condemned the act. “His behaviour toward the children was completely inappropriate and humiliating. In front of others, the child was insulted by being told that they didn't even know the alphabet, and I understand that the child's ear was pinched as well. Such behaviour is never acceptable. Children have rights, and those rights must be respected. They may not be fully aware of children's rights," she told the media. In response to the criticism, the student clarified that Jaleel had asked him to write some words in Hindi. When he made a mistake, Jaleel helped him as a teacher. The student emphasised that he had no issues with that. “We didn't feel it was an insult; he acted like a teacher,” one student stated in a video.Jaleel has denied the allegations. In a Facebook post, he emphasised his background in education, stating that he used to be a teacher who was always friendly with his students and wanted the best for them. “I do not believe in delivering boring, one-sided speeches at felicitation programs. Instead, I prefer to engage students and parents through interactive questions and conversations to identify both their strengths and weaknesses,” he said. Acknowledging that he held the student's ear, he explained, “I held the child’s ear while smiling, and the student was also smiling. Since the circulating video showed the child’s face blurred, it was not clear.”

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday, July 14 refused to suspend the sentence of Pulsar Suni, an accused in the 2017 actor assault case.Dismissing Suni’s plea, a division bench comprising comprising Justices Raja Vijayaraghavan V and KV Jayakumar said, “Having regard to the role attributed to the applicant, the nature of the offence, the manner in which it was committed, the gravity and seriousness of the crime, the sentence imposed by the trial court, the criminal antecedents of the applicant in as many as 11 grave crimes, his alleged involvement in another criminal case while he was on bail in the present case, and his violation of the conditions of bail imposed by the court, we are of the considered view that no exceptional circumstance has been made out warranting the suspension of the sentence.”On December 8 last year, the Principal District and Sessions Court, Ernakulam, had sentenced six accused, including Suni, to 20 years imprisonment in the case. It had also acquitted actor Dileep, who had been arraigned as the eighth accused and was alleged to have conspired in commissioning the offence. After hearing Suni’s plea for suspension of his sentence, on July 9, the court had reserved its decision. Suni was represented in court by senior advocate Sasthamangalam S Ajithkumar. Special public prosecutor (SPP) V Aja Kumar appeared on behalf of the state, with advocate Vrinda Grover additionally appearing for the survivor. Advocate Ajithkumar argued that Suni had already spent 8.5 years in prison and that it amounts to a substantial portion of the 20-year sentence. He also contended that Dileep’s acquittal substantially weakened the prosecution’s case, as it removed the alleged motive behind the offence.Opposing Suni’s plea, advocate Vrinda Grover told the court that his conviction had followed a rigorous trial based on oral, documentary, and electronic evidence. Suni had not completed even half of the sentence imposed for an offense that had “shocked the conscience of the society,” she stated. She also said that the case involved a continuing crime because the sexual assault had been recorded and copied onto memory cards.SPP Aja Kumar too opposed Suni’s plea, referring to the violations of his bail conditions that Suni committed after the Supreme Court granted him bail in 2024. The prosecutor also raised the issue of the memory card containing the assault visuals, stating that the investigation into the alleged copying of the memory card containing visuals of the crime was still pending.Refusing to suspend the sentence, the court observed, “We are of the considered view that the applicant has failed to make out any exceptional or sufficient grounds warranting the suspension of the execution of the sentence imposed by the trial court.”

An Adivasi struggle, a false case, and brutal torture: The story of KK Surendran

Follow TNM's WhatsApp channel for news updates and story links. After more than two decades of legal battles, KK Surendran, a victim of custodial torture in Muthanga of Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad, has received a court verdict ordering the Kerala government to pay him Rs 12.5 lakh in compensation. The legal battle spanning 22 years stemmed from a false case filed by the Kerala police in connection with the Muthanga agitation. Surendran was tortured in custody, the physical effects of which he continues to suffer even now, including partial hearing loss. The Muthanga agitation was a land occupation struggle led by the Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha at the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad in February 2003.Surendran was arrested by the police for allegedly supporting the protestors and was labelled a left-wing extremist. “The police alleged that I trained the Adivasis to use arms while they were protesting for land. I had no connection to the agitation,” he said.Later, a CBI inquiry resulted in his release from jail. However, the physical injuries and trauma he suffered due to custodial torture at the Sulthan Bathery police station remained in his memory. This prompted him to file a petition in court seeking compensation. Although he received a favourable court order in 2021, the then-government, led by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), appealed against it. After about five years, he obtained another favourable judgement on March 16 this year.Surendran, a Dalit man and a retired faculty member at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), met with Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan on July 9, who assured him that the state would not appeal the decision and would proceed with the compensation payment.Unsettled wounds During the Muthanga struggle, agitating Adivasis occupied forest land to protest broken government promises regarding land distribution. Over 600 tribal families entered the Muthanga forest area, set up temporary huts, and began cultivating the land as a form of peaceful protest. The movement was led by the Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha (AGMS) and notable leaders such as CK Janu and M Geethanandan. A police firing on February 19 resulted in two deaths: one tribal man and one policeman. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) was in power in Kerala at that time, under chief minister AK Antony. When the Muthanga firing occurred, Surendran was in Thiruvananthapuram participating in a dharna organised by the DIET staff association. "I went to Thiruvananthapuram on February 18, and the dharna took place on 19. I learned about the police action through newspapers," he stated. However, police found Surendran’s phone number in the diary of one of the protest leaders, M Geethanandan, and alleged that Surendran was connected to the protest.“As part of my role in DIET, I did work related to tribal education, which is how Geethanandan had my contact number. Apart from that, I had no connection with the struggle. However, police alleged that I gave classes to Adivasis on how to use weapons,” he said.Surendran was arrested when he returned to Wayanad from Thiruvananthapuram on February 22. He was forcibly taken from his staff room by the police, dragged across the floor in front of colleagues and students, and thrown into a police jeep without disclosure of any reason for arrest. Starting from 10.30 amnthat morning, he was subjected to physical torture till 9.30 pm at the Sulthan Bathery Police Station.Surendran alleged that he was denied food and water, and his arrest was not communicated to his family. Neither was he produced before a magistrate within 24 hours as mandated by law.His support for the Adivasi struggle had made him a target for the police, Surendran alleged, adding that the arrest and the fabricated case were all pre-planned. “Adivasis were conducting a genuine protest for their land. But the then UDF government did not respond to the struggle properly; instead, they gave free rein to the police,” Surendran explained, adding that the police’s handling of the struggle resulted in violence. “The police arrested and assaulted innocent individuals like me,” he said. After his arrest, his wife approached the Kerala High Court, which directed the authorities to provide him with proper medical treatment. As a result, he was admitted to the Pariyaram Medical College, where he remained under police custody for 12 days while receiving treatment.Later, the case went to the CBI, who gave him a clean chit.“If the CBI had not found that I am innocent, I might still not have a job, and I would have still been waiting for the verdict, as the Muthanga case trial finished only recently,” Surendran added.Surendran returned to the service in 2004, and retired in 2018.Two decades of legal battleImmediately after his release from jail on March 30, 2003, he filed a criminal complaint against the police officers who assaulted him. In 2008, the Kerala High Court quashed the case. In 2004, he filed an indigent o
