BJP banks on select seats to break Kerala’s bipolar poll pattern

Follow TNM's WhatsApp channel for news updates and story links. After senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader O Rajagopal broke the party’s jinx in 2016 by winning its first seat in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, poll pundits predicted there would be no turning back for the saffron party in the state. However, the 2021 election turned out to be a damp squib for the BJP, which was unable to increase its seats and also lost its only seat in Nemom to its arch rival, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI[M]) Though the seat slipped away from the BJP, the party has been able to raise its vote share in the state. As per the data available at the Election Commission, the BJP’s vote share only slightly increased from 10.53% in 2016 to 11.3% in 2021. However, it showed a sharp increase to 16.8% in the general election of 2024, when BJP’s Suresh Gopi won from the Thrissur seat. This vote share went down to 14.76 % in the local body elections of 2025. But major local bodies, including Thiruvananthapuram corporation, Thripunitura and Palakkad municipalities, went to the BJP. This term, the BJP has been strategically focusing on around 40 seats where it has scored well during the recent local body elections. Among these, top priority has been given to seats such as Nemom, Palakkad, Manjeswaram, Kazhakoottam and Thrissur. Apart from these constituencies, the party is seen as a strong force in Kasargod, Malampuzha, Attingal and Chattannur, where it was a runner-up in the last Assembly election. Nemom One of the first candidatures announced by the BJP was that of its state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar in Nemom Assembly constituency in Thiruvananthapuram district. As per a C Voter pre-poll survey, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a high chance of winning the seat. Rajeev is contesting against sitting MLA V Sivankutty of the CPI(M), who beat Rajagopal and closed the BJP’s single account in Kerala in 2021. Congress has fielded its former MLA KS Sabarinathan. Sabarinathan too is enjoying the success of increasing the tally of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Thiruvananthapuram corporation in the recent local body election. This makes it a strong triangular fight in Nemom. The CPI(M), which scraped through by a narrow margin of 3,949 votes in 2021, is feeling the heat of BJP’s intense campaign. In fact, reports said that Sivankutty was initially reluctant to contest from this seat this time but was persuaded by the CPI(M). The party feared that Sivankutty’s absence would lead to speculations of CPI(M) helping the BJP win. It is an existential crisis also for the Congress, which has faced allegations of a deal with the BJP ever since Rajagopal won the seat in 2016 and has lagged in third place since. Deals are in the news this time too in Nemom after the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) openly announced its support for the CPI(M) candidate. Announcing its support for Sivankutty, the SDPI claimed that the CPI(M) local leadership had sought their support. The high vote share gained by the BJP during the Thiruvananthapuram corporation election has raised the NDA’s expectations. Of the 23 wards of the Thiruvananthapuram corporation, which comes under Nemom constituency, 17 went with the NDA. Also, areas under the Nemom Assembly constituency have largely favoured Rajeev in the Lok Sabha election, where he lost to Congress’ Shashi Tharoor in 2024. Rajeev had a clear lead in the Nemom, Kazhakoottam and Vattiyoorkavu Assembly segments in the last general election. Palakkad If the show of strength during campaigns is an indicator, the BJP is witnessing an upward momentum in the Palakkad constituency. This is a seat from where the Congress had back-to-back victories. The BJP candidate is Sobha Surendran, one of the senior leaders of the party. In 2016, Sobha was instrumental in pushing CPI(M) to the third position in Palakkad, while she came second. Since then, the contest has been between Congress and BJP. Though the constituency has supported Congress in the past two elections, the situation is a bit tight this time. The Congress is facing the battle with the baggage of its former MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, whom it had to dismiss from the party over a series of sexual harassment cases. To turn public sentiment in their favour, the party has fielded actor-director Ramesh Pisharody, a long-term supporter of Congress. The Left, on the other hand, has brought NMR Razack, a businessman, on board. Though BJP’s heavyweight, metroman E Sreedharan, tasted defeat in the seat in the 2021 election, the party hopes that winning the Palakkad municipality for the last three consecutive terms will be favourable to Sobha. The belief in a possible win for Sobha rests on the fact that she has consistently increased the BJP’s vote share wherever she has contested, be it Palakkad, Alappuzha or Kazhakoottam. She was also able to consolidate significant support from sections of the Ezhava community. This support is like

Missing Kerala woman found after 4-day search in Kodagu

Sharanya GS, a 36-year-old IT professional from Kerala who went missing during a trek in Kodagu, was found safe on Sunday, April 5, after an intensive four-day search operation, bringing relief to her family and authorities.Sharanya had travelled to Karnataka for a solo trek and was staying at a homestay in Yavakapadi near Napoklu. On April 2, she began her trek to Tadiandamol after completing formalities at a Forest Department checkpoint, where officials had recorded her details and advised her to trek with a group due to the presence of wild elephants in the region. She subsequently joined a group of around ten trekkers.During the trek, Sharanya got separated from the group and lost her way in the forest. At around 2 pm, she informed the homestay staff over the phone that she had lost her way. Her phone soon went out of network coverage, making further communication impossible. While the rest of the group returned safely by evening, she failed to return. Some trekkers later said they had last seen her at the hilltop, where she was playing with a dog and had indicated that she would descend on her own.“We were climbing down, but after a point, I realised that I could not see the others from my group. I walked a little bit and realised I was in a dense forest,” Sharanya told the media. She said that she only had a 500 ml water bottle with her. “I reached a place where there was a stream, and it was next to a rocky terrain. On the first day, my legs were hurting, so I didn’t move much. On the second day, I made sure that I was sitting in an open area because I thought that if a drone was being sent to take visuals, there would be visibility. On the third day, I tried to walk a little, but since it was raining, the area had become slippery,” she said. “Every day, in the morning and evening, I would shout to see if somebody could hear me. Today also, I was sitting on top of a tree, and I heard someone, so I shouted. Some people heard and found me,” she said.A large-scale search operation was launched involving forest officials, police personnel, anti-Naxal force teams, dog squads, and local tribal communities. Most of the teams had come back on Sunday evening without finding her. It was a team of Adivasi people who eventually found her.At its peak, around 150 personnel were involved, with over 80 people combing the forest daily. Teams searched dense forest stretches, alternate trails and interior areas, with drones also deployed to aid the operation. However, difficult terrain, dense vegetation, and poor mobile connectivity hampered efforts. After four days of sustained search, Sharanya was located in the forest area. She is safe and has been taken to Madikeri Medical College for a medical check-up.

Families of Air India crash victims write to PM Modi, seek immediate release of black box data

Families of those killed in the Air India Flight AI‑171 crash have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pressing for the immediate release of the aircraft’s Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) data as they seek clarity on the cause of the accident. The appeal is associated with the ongoing frustration with the pace of the investigation and the level of communication from authorities and the airline. In their letter, families described access to the black box recordings as “extremely important” to understanding the truth about what happened when the Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad on June 12 last year. The catastrophe claimed the lives of 241 people on board and 19 on the ground, with only one passenger surviving.“We want to know the truth about what caused this crash and whether there was any technical problem,” the letter states, urging that if the data cannot be released publicly, it should at least be shared directly with affected families. The letter is in the process of being sent to the Prime Minister.Copies of the letter will also be sent to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) Director General G.V.G. Yugandhar, and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Director General Faiz Ahmed Kidwai. The letter follows a meeting on Saturday attended in person by about 25 family members, with more than 30 participating online, at which relatives discussed unresolved concerns about the investigation and support from Air India and the Tata Group.Participants said telephone calls often went unanswered and communication was largely restricted to email, a medium they said was not accessible for all.“Many people in villages don’t even know how to use email,” one relative said, calling for a dedicated contact number or better support system.Family members also raised questions about when they would receive the digital belongings of their loved ones and emphasised the need for respectful and direct engagement from authorities. After the gathering, one family member told reporters that releasing the black box data was vital for understanding “the truth and circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”The formal investigation into the crash is being led by the AAIB under internationally accepted protocols. Both the CVR and FDR were recovered from the wreckage days after the incident and transported to a laboratory in New Delhi for detailed examination. An initial phase of data extraction was completed by late June, with technical experts analysing cockpit information and flight parameters to reconstruct the final moments before the accident. In a preliminary report published in July last year, the AAIB noted that both engines lost thrust shortly after taking off when the fuel control switches were moved from the “RUN” to the “CUTOFF” position within seconds of liftoff, leading to a complete loss of power. The report did not assign a definitive cause for the movement of the fuel control switches, with investigators continuing to review all available evidence.Authorities have emphasised that a comprehensive investigation is being led with an impartial nature.

Pulse Check 2026: Is Kerala’s health sector still the LDF’s winning prescription

“When I was made Kerala’s health minister in 2016, I was also a fresh hand. The public health sector in the state fares better than most others, and that is why we were able to effectively resist the Nipah outbreak and the Covid-19 pandemic,” said KK Shailaja, ex-health minister, who was given the moniker ‘corona slayer’ for her work during her tenure between 2016 and 2021. High life expectancy, low infant mortality, and good accessibility have long set Kerala’s public health infrastructure apart, she said. The veteran CPI(M) leader, who won several international recognitions, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, which she famously declined, has always maintained that her success is not individual but institutional. However, the very same ‘Kerala model’ has now come under the scanner, exposing the alleged chinks in its institutional armour. In February 2026, controversy intensified after a pair of surgical forceps were found in the abdomen of 51-year old Usha Joseph, who underwent a hysterectomy five years ago. Protests broke out in front of the Alapuzha Medical College Hospital, and the issue snowballed after the chief surgeon, Dr Lalithambika, denied the charges and put the blame on work overload and staff shortage. The Opposition was quick to catch on to the issue, and ever since, the alleged deterioration of Kerala’s public health infrastructure has been a major political target for both the UDF and the BJP.At the centre of this crossfire is health minister Veena George, a journalist-turned politician, who has faced media hostility and the burden of her predecessor KK Shailaja’s legacy. In an altercation with protesting KSU members at the Kannur Railway station in February, Veena sustained injuries to her neck and hand. The incident spiralled into political mud-slinging after Opposition leader VD Satheesan launched scathing attacks on the LDF government, alleging that Veena faked the injury. As Kerala gears up for a high-stakes Assembly battle on April 9, it is pertinent to unpack the controversies surrounding the health department, which is a prominent political marker of the incumbent LDF’s ten-year performance. More importantly, health being a question of fundamental sustenance, it is also crucial to examine whether this chaos has impacted voter trust in ways that could affect their candidate preferences.Controversies and public trust“I have read about several instances of medical negligence from recent times, and once, it was said that there are not enough scrub nurses in government hospitals. I was shocked,” said Lalitha, a retired Malayali nurse who served for decades in Tamil Nadu.Scrub nurses are those nurses assigned to ensure that all the surgical instruments are intact before and after surgery. It has been reported that staff shortage often culminates in operating theatres having no specific scrub nurses, making the surgery prone to errors like the one that happened with Usha Joseph. As a professional who has worked outside Kerala, she attests that the state is doing better than most others, but says that we cannot rest on these laurels. “It is scary to read about the alleged lack of medicines and equipment. That recent fire in the ICU, for instance. It is an accident, yes. But that begs us to think if we can trust government hospitals to be responsible,” she added. Lalitha was referring to the unfortunate fire at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital in March, after a ventilator in the ICU burst into flames. Several others, whom TNM spoke to, resonate with Lalitha. When asked if such incidents reduce their trust in the government, some of them answered in the affirmative. Others reiterated how they mostly do not have an option, considering the rising cost of treatment at private hospitals.Dr D Dhanuraj, Founder-Chairman of the Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR), said that the fundamental problem is how Kerala is still trying to use age-old solutions for evolving problems. “I think we lack a targeted approach for different sections of the population, and this, I believe, will show in the upcoming elections. When I say this, I am speaking about the hygiene, the beds, the quality of care, and other aspects as well. We also need to build a responsive system that reflects the health of the people as well as the environment,” he explained. He also said that improving the quality of healthcare also means finding the resources for that. “All the governments, including the manifestos we see now, promise quite a lot without thinking about where to find funds. For example, to raise the token charge at a government hospital by a Rupee is a political challenge. But there are several middle-class and higher-class people who can pay that, which will bring huge money into the system. So, unless we manage to improve the system bureaucratically and administratively, and innovate models of finance, the lapses will stand out, putting the marginalised people at risk and causing such political stor

The Supreme Court has formally notified the constitution of a nine-judge Constitution Bench, which will commence hearing from April 7 in the long-pending Sabarimala review matter. As per the cause list published for April 7 on the official website of the apex court, the bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant will hear the reference arising out of review petitions filed against its September 2018 judgment permitting entry of women of all ages into the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala, along with connected issues that raise significant questions on religious freedoms. The proceedings before the nine-judge bench, which also comprises Justices B.V. Nagarathna, M.M. Sundresh, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Aravind Kumar, A.G. Masih, Prasanna B. Varale, R. Mahadevan, and Joymalya Bagchi, are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Chief Justice’s court at the Supreme Court.Apart from the Sabarimala issue, the top court is also expected to examine broader constitutional questions relating to the scope of religious freedom under Article 25, including the entry of Muslim women into mosques and dargahs, the rights of Parsi women to access fire temples after interfaith marriage, the validity of excommunication practices, and the legality of female genital mutilation in the Dawoodi Bohra community.Earlier, the CJI Surya Kant-led bench had fixed a detailed schedule for the hearing and clarified that the maintainability of the reference is conclusively settled. It also identified seven substantial questions of law for adjudication. As per the schedule, arguments by parties supporting the review petitions will be heard from April 7 to April 9, followed by submissions from those opposing the review between April 14 and April 16.Rejoinder submissions, if any, will be taken up on April 21, with final arguments by the amicus curiae expected to conclude on April 22.The top court had directed all parties to file written submissions in advance and emphasised strict adherence to timelines, observing that Constitution Bench matters are of paramount importance. In the run-up to the hearings, written submissions filed on behalf of the Travancore Devaswom Board have urged the apex court to adopt a “community-centric” understanding of religion, arguing that courts should refrain from reinterpreting faith-based practices and questioning the continued application of the “essential religious practices” doctrine.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, the Union government’s second-highest law officer, informed the apex court that the Union government supports the review petitions.

Follow TNM's WhatsApp channel for news updates and story links. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against Aishath Farsana, a leader of the Muslim Women’s League, the women’s wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), over her alleged ‘hate’ remarks against LDF-backed independent candidate Shanavas Padhoor in Kasaragod.Aishath Farsana, the district secretary of the Women’s League in Kasaragod, allegedly referred to Shanavas as a ‘fake believer’ during a United Democratic Front (UDF) family meeting held in Mulleria. The incident took place on Saturday, April 4, when Farsana used the term ‘Munafiq’, commonly understood as someone who outwardly claims to be a Muslim while concealing disbelief or opposition to Islam, to describe the candidate. After a video of her speech surfaced, the LDF filed a complaint, alleging that her remarks violated the Model Code of Conduct.Clips from Farsana’s speech have since been widely circulated on social media, drawing criticism that she was attempting to solicit votes by invoking religious sentiments.Speaking to Mathrubhumi News on Sunday, April 5, Shanavas said he had seen the video and felt the remark was inappropriate. “I’m not sure if she used the term fully understanding its meaning,” he said. “Since my candidacy was announced, I have heard various allegations, including that I am a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) agent. Such remarks usually surface just before elections, but this time they appeared earlier. I don’t think it will have much impact on the constituency,” he added.Shanavas said the LDF filed the complaint solely because the remarks were in violation of the election code. “I respect women. It may have been a slip of the tongue in the heat of the moment,” he said. The Kasaragod Assembly constituency has been a stronghold of the IUML since 1977. In the 2026 elections, the IUML has fielded Kallatra Mayin Haji as the UDF candidate, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated BJP leader ML Ashwini.

Kerala elections: What the greens want

A news report or two about the scorching heat and water-guzzling campaigners has become routine when election season comes around. The heat, climate change, or the slew of environmental concerns, however, barely make talking points outside of hyperlocal contexts in election campaigns. The biggest ‘environment story’ in poll-bound Kerala this month has been Congress candidate Chandy Oommen’s campaign that ditched flex boards and hoardings and relied on a hybrid cycle to meet constituents. But the state’s environmental needs are far more serious and urgent. In just the past decade, unofficial numbers show the state has lost over 1,000 lives to environmental disasters, including floods and landslides. The state also saw drastic sea erosion and witnessed eight of the warmest years ever recorded in the decade between 2012 and 2021. In many of the instances of natural disasters, the state machinery has effectively coordinated relief and rescue. But, environmental activists in the state say, there is a need for the government’s approach to shift from the reactive to the preventive. “From Forest to Sea: Kerala People's Environmental Charter” elaborates on this. It is a ‘manifesto’ prepared by the Sahyadri Environment Summit 2026 and the Kerala Paristhithi Aikya Vedhi to invite the attention of voters, politicians, and policy makers to the needs and nuances of ecological and climate governance. At the heart of the manifesto is the argument that Kerala’s many environmental concerns should not be treated in isolation, but seen as interdependent, as the state itself is “an interconnected mosaic of ecosystems linked from ridge to sea.” It demands a development model that will simultaneously “strengthen the ecological systems,” and calls for “a new approach to governance that integrates ecological realities into planning, infrastructure, agriculture, industry and public investment.” Key proposals The charter acknowledges Kerala’s surging energy demands in the context of increasing “urbanisation, cooling requirements, digital infrastructure, electric mobility and expanding economic activity.” The state, however, is dependent heavily on electricity bought from fossil-fuel based power plants situated in other states. To sustainably tackle this, Kerala should transition to decentralised “renewable systems, distributed generation, smart grids and energy efficient infrastructure,” the charter argues. Quarrying and mining is another sensitive issue in Kerala that the manifesto addresses. The state is seeing rapid expansion of the construction sector, but also a "large stock of vacant and underused houses,” the manifesto observes. It says that a responsible “materials policy” will “strictly regulate extraction, reduce demand for virgin materials, and shift the construction sector toward circular, resource-efficient and landscape-sensitive practices.” Sea erosion and destruction of coastal ecosystems like mangroves and wetlands is another topic that saw several discussions in the past decade, especially in the context of the Vizhinjam port construction in Thiruvananthapuram district. The manifesto calls for “planning, scientific monitoring of shoreline and sediment systems, climate adaptation for tidal flooding and sea incursion, restoration of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and wetlands, stronger preparedness for maritime pollution events, and explicit recognition of the rights and livelihood security of fishing communities.” A major recommendation in the charter is for legislation that addresses rights-based, time-bound compensation and resettlement for communities displaced by disasters or living in high-risk zones. Titled the “Kerala Ecological Vulnerability and Climate Risk Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act”, the manifesto demands that the law “ensure secure housing, livelihood restoration, financial recovery and access to health care, education and essential services. It must also recognise the growing reality of climate displacement, where communities can no longer safely remain in repeatedly hazardous areas.” “From Forest to Sea” also recommends a Land Governance Reform Commission and a State Land Use Policy that will serve as a “practical system of ecological zoning and spatial planning across the ridge-to-sea landscape.” Besides recommending several other issue-based recommendations, the manifesto also emphasises the need for environmental governance to be durable across political cycles. It proposes a Kerala Environmental Data Dashboard to provide public access to data on pollution, quarry permits, and wetland notifications, ensuring that citizens can hold leadership accountable for measurable ecological outcomes. Wayanad landslide survivors wait to move into govt homes, Congress’ promises undelivered On the Madhav Gadgil report Protection of the Western Ghats is integral to the protection of Kerala’s diverse ecosystems from the high ranges to the coasts, the manifesto acknowledges. “Western Ghats is one of

Wayanad rehab: Congress collected Rs 5.38 crore, discloses KPCC pres Sunny Joseph

The Congress party collected Rs 5.38 crore for Wayanad landslide relief, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph disclosed on Saturday, April 4. A total of Rs 6.18 crore has been used towards buying land to build houses to rehabilitate survivors of the 2024 Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides, he said. “In the first phase, 3.25 acre land was purchased for Rs 3.68 crore. Of this, Rs 1.05 crore was contributed by the Youth Congress. In the second phase, 2.18 acre land was bought for Rs 2.5 crore. Besides the funds collected by the party and the Youth Congress through the donation drive, an additional Rs 97 lakh from the KPCC funds were also pooled in to buy the land,” Sunny Joseph told the media. Another Rs 73 lakh is required for registration and other legal procedures involved in the land purchase, he said. He added that the money collected by the party was received in a joint bank account held by the KPCC president and the Leader of Opposition. “In order to build the app that facilitated the fund collection, Rs 9.3 lakh was utilised when K Sudhakaran was the KPCC president,” he said. “As this is a project the KPCC took on, the funds required to construct the houses will be found through party efforts under Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi,” he said. The Congress’ refusal to disclose the amount collected for Wayanad rehabilitation efforts had drawn much flak. On Wednesday, April 1, Leader of Opposition VD Satheeshan had told TNM that details of all financial transactions will be revealed once the houses were constructed and the project was completed. “The construction will be completed in a matter of three to four months,” he had said. Earlier, Congress’ Kalpetta MLA T Siddique had told TNM that the delays in construction were due to the fact that the party was offering rehabilitation to those survivors who did not make it to the government’s list.Wayanad landslide survivors wait to move into govt homes, Congress’ promises undelivered Entire neighbourhoods had been swept away in the massive landslides that hit Meppadi grama panchayat in Wayanad in July 2024. While the government’s rehabilitation project is still underway with 178 houses handed over, survivors who had chosen the project sponsored by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have already moved into finished homes. Only the Congress’ project remains to be started yet.

Trump budget seeks $1.5T in defence spending alongside cuts in domestic programs

President Donald Trump has proposed boosting defense spending to $1.5 trillion in his 2027 budget released Friday, the largest such request in decades, reflecting his emphasis on U.S. military investments over domestic programs. The sizable increase for the Pentagon, some 44%, had been telegraphed by the Republican president even before the U.S.-led war against Iran. The president's plan would also reduce spending on non-defense programs by 10%."President Trump promised to reinvest in America's national security infrastructure, to make sure our nation is safe in a dangerous world," wrote Budget Director Russell Vought. The president's annual budget is considered a reflection of the administration's values and does not carry the force of law. The massive document typically highlights an administration's priorities, but Congress, which handles federal spending issues, is free to reject it and often does. This year's White House document is intended to provide a road map from the president to Congress as lawmakers build their own budgets and annual appropriations bills to keep the government funded. Vought spoke to House GOP lawmakers on a private call Thursday.Trump, speaking ahead of an address to the nation this week about the Iran war, signaled the military is his priority, setting up a clash ahead in Congress."We're fighting wars. We can't take care of day care," Trump said at a private White House event Wednesday."It's not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare — all these individual things," he said. "They can do it on a state basis. You can't do it on a federal."Money for immigration enforcement, air traffic controllers and national parksAmong the priorities the White House called for:—Supporting the Trump administration's immigration enforcement and deportation operations by eliminating aspects of a refugee resettlement aid program, maintaining Immigration and Customs Enforcement funds at current year levels and drawing on last's year's increases for the Department of Homeland Security funds to continue opening detention facilities, including 100,000 beds for adults and 30,000 for families.-- A 13% increase in funding for the Department of Justice to focus on violent criminals and the president's promise to stop what the White House calls migrant crime.-- A $10 billion fund within the National Park Service for "construction and beautification" projects in Washington, D.C.-- A $481 million increase in funding to enhance aviation safety and support an air traffic controller hiring surge.Cuts to green energy, housing and health programs— Cancels more than $15 billion from the Biden-era bipartisan infrastructure law, including funds for renewable energy projects and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, grants.— A 19% cut in the Department of Agriculture, ending certain university grants, a 13% cut for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and about a 12% decrease to the Health and Human Services department, including cuts to a low-income heating assistance program. The White House is touting cuts of what it calls "woke programs" that often direct federal investments toward low-income communities. The budget used the word "woke" 34 timesFor example, the administration is looking to cut Community Services Block Grants, which funds activities such as financial and job counseling and helping people obtain adequate housing. The administration says its cuts would target grants "hijacked by radicals" to promote equity-building and green energy initiatives. The president also seeks to cut $106 million in funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which it says has "pushed radical gender ideology onto children."Supporters and detractorsThe Republican chairmen of the House and Senate Armed Services committees applauded Trump's request for defense spending, saying the money would ensure the country's military remains the most advanced in the world while confronting growing threats from China, Russia, Iran and others."America is facing the most dangerous global environment since World War II," said Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala.The top Democrat on House Budget Committee, Rep. Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania, said the president was demanding a massive increase in defense while cutting billions from health care, housing and more."This budget represents 'America Last,'" Boyle said.Debt, deficits and tough choices aheadWith the nation running nearly $2 trillion annual deficits and the debt swelling past $39 trillion, the federal balance sheets have long been operating in the red.About two-thirds of the nation's estimated $7 trillion in annual spending covers the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs, as well as Social Security income, which are essentially growing — along with an aging population — on autopilot. It's the rest of the annual budget where much of the debate in Congress takes place, as Democrats over the years have

US military aircraft hit in Iran war are first shot down by enemy fire in over 20 years

Iran shooting down two American military aircraft marks an exceedingly rare assault for the U.S. that has not happened in more than 20 years and shows the Islamic Republic's continued ability to hit back despite President Donald Trump asserting it has been "completely decimated."The attacks came five weeks after U.S. and Israeli strikes first pounded Iran, with Trump saying earlier this week that Tehran's "ability to launch missiles and drones is dramatically curtailed."Iran shot down a U.S. F15-E Strike Eagle fighter jet Friday, with one service member getting rescued and the search still underway for a second, U.S. officials say. Iranian state media also said a U.S. A-10 attack aircraft crashed after being hit by Iranian defense forces. The last time a U.S. fighter jet was shot down in combat was an A-10 Thunderbolt II during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Houston Cantwell, a former F-16 fighter pilot. But, he said, that's because the U.S. had largely been fighting insurgents who didn't have the same anti-aircraft capabilities. The fact that there have not been more fighter jets lost in Iran, Cantwell said, is a testament to the capabilities of U.S. forces."The fact that this hasn't happened until now is an absolute miracle," said Cantwell, who served four combat tours and is now a senior resident fellow at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. "We're flying combat missions here, they are being shot at every day."Shoulder-fired missile likely used, experts sayU.S. Central Command said in a statement Wednesday that American forces have flown more than 13,000 missions in the Iran war while striking more than 12,300 targets. After more than a month of punishing U.S.-Israeli airstrikes, a degraded Iranian military nonetheless remains a stubborn foe. Its steady stream of strikes against Israel and Gulf Arab neighbors have been causing regional upheaval and global economic shock. When it comes to American dominance over Iran's airspace, there's still a distinction between air superiority and air supremacy, said Behnam Ben Taleblu, Iran program senior director at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a hawkish Washington think tank."A disabled air defense system is not a destroyed air defense system," he said. "We shouldn't be shocked that they're still fighting."American planes have been flying missions at lower altitudes, which makes them more vulnerable to Iran's missiles, Taleblu said. It's possible that Iran fired at the F-15 with a surface-to-air missile, but it's more likely that a portable, shoulder-fired missile was used, he said. Those are much harder to detect and reflect how Iran is "weak but still lethal.""This is a regime that is fighting for its life," he said.Mark Cancian, a retired Marine colonel and a senior defense adviser with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, agreed that a shoulder-fired missile was likely used against the fighter jet.Nonetheless, the American air war against Iran has been a "tremendous success" so far, he said.To put things in perspective, he said the loss rate for American warplanes flying over Germany during World War II was 3% at one point, which would equal about 350 warplanes in the U.S. war against Iran."But then there's the political side — you have a American public that is accustomed to fighting bloodless wars," Cancian said. "Then a large part of the country doesn't support the war. So to them, any loss is unacceptable."Pilots are trained on what to do if their plane is hitThe last U.S. jet shot down in combat was struck by an Iraqi surface-to-air missile over Baghdad on April 8, 2003. The pilot safely ejected and was rescued, according to the Air Force. In high-threat environments like missions over Iran, Cantwell, the retired general, said an aviator's blood pressure goes up and they become highly alert to incoming missiles. Those are typically either infrared- or radar-guided missiles, he said, requiring different evasive tactics. If they are hit and need to eject from their aircraft, they are trained on what to do next, he said.Pilots learn to check for wounds after a violent ejection and the shock of a missile explosion and, most crucially, how they are going to communicate their location so rescuers can find them.At the same time, he said, the enemy is likely working to intercept the communications or even spoof the location.Helicopters are more at risk than other aircraftThe planes that went down Friday were not the first crewed American aircraft to be lost overall in Iran.A military helicopter and airplane exploded in 1980 during an aborted mission to rescue several dozen American hostages at the U.S. embassy in Tehran, according to the Air Force Historical Support Division. After a series of setbacks, including severe dust storms and mechanical failures, the mission was called off. As the aircraft took off, the rotor blades of one of the RH-53 helicopters collided with an EC-130 aircraft full of f

‘We will release full Hema report, not redacted version’: UDF’s VD Satheesan promises

Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan said that if the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) comes to power, it will release the Hema Committee report. In an interview with TNM’s Pooja Prasanna and Haritha John, he questioned why the Pinarayi Vijayan government was “hiding” the report. “We have demanded that they produce it,” he said. The Hema Committee was constituted in 2017 following the abduction and sexual assault of a prominent female actor in Kerala. Chaired by retired judge Justice K Hema, it was tasked with documenting gender-based injustices in the film industry and recommending reforms. The committee submitted a nearly 5,000-page report to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in December 2019. Five years later, in August 2024, the government released a 290-page redacted version amid pressure from the opposition, activists, and journalists.VD Satheeshan said that if the UDF comes to power, it will release the full report without redactions. He was also asked about his differing responses to allegations involving Congress leader Rahul Mamkootathil and CPI(M) leader PK Sasi. Sasi is contesting as a UDF-backed independent candidate in Ottappalam. Rahul Mamkootathil is currently facing allegations of rape, coercion, and forced abortion. In 2018, PK Sasi was accused of sexual assault and suspended for six months.Responding to this, Satheesan said, “He (PK Sasi) has not done anything,” and described the allegations as a result of “party rivalry.” He added that, unlike Rahul, PK Sasi had “no case against him, no allegation outside, nobody made a complaint to any police.”The opposition leader Satheesan also spoke about his efforts to bring the UDF back to power and said he would quit politics if he failed. He again challenged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to a debate, alleged that the Left’s governance mirrors that of the Sangh Parivar, and outlined the Congress’ plans for Kerala if voted to power. Watch the full interview.

Love Jihad out, micro-minority in: How NDA's Kerala manifesto reinvented itself

In a bid to reach out to a community that accounts for nearly 18 percent of the state’s population, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) 2026 Kerala manifesto has promised to grant micro-minority status to Christians by amending relevant laws. However, even as the alliance rebrands its politics under the tagline of "PoliticsOfPerformance, when compared to its 2021 manifesto, several welfare commitments have quietly been scaled back, Centred on the vision of a "Vikasita Keralam (Developed Kerala)” the 2026 manifesto emphasises AI-powered governance, data-led administration and large-scale infrastructure. It promises the inclusion of an an AI-based citizen service portal, a blockchain land registry to curb corruption, a Kerala administrative modernisation programme and Kerala's first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a promise made by several leaders of the BJP including Union minister Suresh Gopi but remains unfulfilled. According to the manifesto, the promised micro-minority status will ensure equitable access to welfare schemes, scholarships and community development benefits. The recognition will also help integrate micro-minorities into Kerala's development agenda and safeguard them against social and political marginalisation. The starkest contrast between the 2021 and 2026 manifestos lies in their welfare promises. In 2021, the NDA promised to raise social security pensions to Rs 3,500 per month. The 2026 manifesto lowers it to Rs 3,000, and narrows the eligibility to senior citizens over 70, widows and women heads of poor households. It also scaled back other welfare schemes. The 2021 manifesto promised six free LPG cylinders per year for families below the poverty line (BPL), while the 2026 version reduced this to two cylinders to be distributed during the festivals of Onam and Christmas. Apart from this, the 2021 manifesto placed legislation against "Love Jihad" and the formation of special investigative teams to probe such cases as a cornerstone. The phrase is absent from the 2026 document. Similarly, a 2021 promise to ban "communal" Islamic banks finds no place in the new manifesto. In 2021, the NDA had called the LDF's Silverline semi-high-speed rail project impractical and promised a third railway line instead. The 2026 manifesto now promises a green high-speed railway network connecting Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur, reducing travel time to three hours and fifteen minutes. Other infrastructure promises in 2026 include completing all phases of the Kochi Metro, introducing metro services in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, developing a major industrial complex around the Vizhinjam Port and unlocking all five of Kerala's national waterways for tourism, transportation and logistics through Vande Bharat Water Metro Services. This year’s manifesto also promises Bhakshya-Arogya Suraksha Cards for women in BPL households, with a monthly recharge of Rs 2,500 for groceries and medicines. It also proposes a doorstep healthcare programme through mobile hospital units, along with a 24/7 free ambulance service in every block panchayat. The 2026 document also includes dedicated sections addressing immediate public concerns such as the stray dog menace and the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam, without compromising water security of Tamil Nadu. It also promises to protect Sabarimala rituals and pursue Devaswom reform, with greater stakes for devotees.

Ground report: Celebrity, businessman, & a veteran in Palakkad’s unusual contest

Palakkad this election season belongs, at first glance, to Sobha Surendran. The BJP's most recognisable vote-catcher in Kerala has plastered the constituency with her face — posters at every junction, banners above every main road. Her rivals are harder to find. Congress has sent in Ramesh Pisharody, a comedian-turned-actor whose face is familiar to every Malayalam film fan. The LDF's independent, NMR Rasaq, is better known for his biryani restaurant chain than for politics. When TNM visited the constituency on March 22, this uneven visibility was hard to ignore. Campaigns may have since picked up pace, but at that point, the gap suggested a race where some candidates were still catching up, and the early momentum was already shaping perception. Palakkad, however, is not a constituency that reveals itself easily. Beneath the posters and flex boards lies a far more complicated contest, shaped by the absence of familiar leaders, uneasy candidate choices, internal party tensions, enduring loyalties, and a voter base that is both committed and quietly disillusioned. While the BJP appears to have seized early visibility, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) continues to rely on its entrenched base, and the LDF is betting on a candidate who breaks from convention. A constituency without its usual anchorsMuch of this election is being fought in the shadow of absence. Congress’ Shafi Parambil, who built a strong personal base in Palakkad, is no longer in the fray, having moved to contest the Vadakara Lok Sabha seat. Rahul Mamkootathil, who won the subsequent bypoll, is also out, expelled from the party following sexual assault allegations. Yet, on the ground, neither absence feels complete. In Pirayiri panchayat, a Congress stronghold, loyalty to both leaders remains strikingly intact. As Rajan, a farmer and daily-wage worker, put it bluntly, “It doesn’t matter who the candidate is. We vote for the party.” A Congress supporter for over a decade, Rajan dismissed concerns about Pisharody’s lack of political experience. He also says the allegations against Rahul have not dented local support. Rajan, in fact, had even campaigned for Rahul during the bypoll. Pointing to a nearby school building, Radhakrishnan, a driver, said it was renovated during Rahul’s tenure. He also credits him with facilitating the construction of five to eight houses for families in need. “Whatever he could do in one-and-a-half years, he did,” Rajan added. Sreenivasan, another driver from the adjacent Yakkara panchayat, reiterated this sentiment. “Rahul still has popular appeal,” he said, adding that the contest would have been tighter had he entered as an independent. Both Rajan and Radhakrishnan believe that Rahul re-entering the fray would have significantly strengthened the UDF’s prospects. Among younger voters, political preferences appear less rigid. Shabu, a Gulf-returned youngster who says he is not deeply engaged in politics, believes Pisharody should win — not because of party loyalty, but because “he is a good person”. Loyalty holds, but not without cracksEven within UDF strongholds, however, there are signs of frustration. Malini (name changed), a vegetable shop worker in Pirayiri, says her support is for Sobha Surendran, whom she refers to as “Sobha chechi”. Her reasoning is more transactional than ideological. “Isn’t that where the money is coming from?” she asked, referring to the BJP-led Union government. “If we want those benefits to reach us properly here, BJP should come.” At the same time, she was candid about her disappointment with the UDF. She recalled that party leaders had promised to help her secure a house during the last election, but never returned. “The next time I see them is now, when the next campaign has started,” she said, half in jest. Ultimately, her expectations are modest. “Whoever wins, they should do something for us. UDF has been winning here all this time, but they haven’t really looked back at people like us.” Candidate choices, and the questions around themIf voters are weighing their options, so too are political observers, many of whom remain puzzled by how this contest has been shaped. Both the UDF and the LDF have faced criticism for fielding candidates without deep political experience against a seasoned campaigner like Sobha Surendran. The CPI(M)’s last-minute decision to field Rasaq, a businessman, raised eyebrows. Congress leaders alleged it was a “deal” intended to help the BJP. Within the LDF, however, the explanation is more pragmatic. “No one was willing to contest from Palakkad,” a party source said, pointing to the cost and uncertainty of fighting in a difficult constituency. “It would cost at least Rs 50 lakh. Not many were ready for that.” There were also murmurs that the seat had effectively been “paid for” — an allegation that remains unverified but widely discussed. The UDF, too, faced its own confusion. Finding a replacement for Shafi Parambil, and navigating Rahul’s ex

Confident of the United Democratic Front (UDF) returning to power in Kerala, the Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader VD Satheesan has said he will quit politics if he fails to lead the alliance to victory in the upcoming Assembly elections. In an exclusive interview to The News Minute, Satheesan said he was willing to stake his political future on the election outcome. “If I am not able to bring UDF back to power, I will retire from politics. I will go for political exile,” he said, adding that any poll debacle for the alliance would be his personal failure.Satheesan, who is contesting from the Paravur constituency in Ernakulam district, expressed confidence that the UDF would secure a decisive mandate, predicting the alliance would win more than 100 seats in the 140-member Assembly. In the previous election, the Left Democratic Front had won 99 seats, returning to power for a second consecutive term.He also clarified that the Congress has not projected a Chief Ministerial candidate and would take a decision only after the election results.Taking a swipe at Vijayan, Satheesan said the Chief Minister had earlier invited him for a public debate but backed out after he accepted the challenge. “He said we can debate on Facebook,” Satheesan added. The Kerala Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in a single phase, with polling set for April 26 and counting of votes on May 2. The contest is primarily between the ruling LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and the Congress-led UDF.

Telangana CM Revanth’s ‘Po mone’ dig at CM Pinarayi Vijayan stokes controversy

Follow TNM's WhatsApp channel for news updates and story links. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy sparked political row during a campaign roadshow in Kerala by targeting Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan with a movie reference declaring that Vijayan’s “time is over” and that the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) is ready to take charge ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections in poll-bound Kerala.Addressing party workers in Nemom constituency, CM Revanth borrowed a famous line from the Malayalam film Narasimham, originally delivered by actor Mohanlal. Tweaking the iconic “Nee po mone Dinesha,” he quipped, “Nee po mone Vijaya!”—drawing loud cheers from the crowd. He followed it up with a direct political attack, saying Vijayan’s “expiry date has passed”, asserting that it was now the UDF’s turn to govern Kerala. The dialogue CM Revanth referenced is one of Malayalam cinema’s most celebrated lines. In *Narasimham, Mohanlal plays a fearless man who confronts injustice. Speaking about the dialogue recently, actor Mohanlal spoke about it on the MyGov Podcast, sharing why the line still resonates 23 years after Narasimham’s release. “‘Nee po mone Dinesha…’ is a very beautiful dialogue. It feels like it speaks directly to life, but it is not a casual attitude,” Mohanlal explained, “It conveys the idea that whatever comes my way, I will face it. I am responsible for all my actions.”CM Revanth had challenged critics of the Five Guarantees announced by the UDF stating that those doubting their implementation should visit Telangana. “I would personally demonstrate to Pinarayi and his ministers how the guarantees are being implemented if a Kerala delegation visits Telangana,” Revanth said, declaring that the “dark era” of Pinarayi was ending and a “golden era” under the UDF was set to begin.Vijayan responded sharply to Reddy’s remarks, calling them “baseless” and accusing him of attempting to undermine Kerala’s governance model. He cited Kerala’s performance on social indicators, including topping the NITI Aayog SDG Index (2023–24), low poverty levels, high literacy rates, and strong public health outcomes.Telangana CM Shri Revanth Reddy's recent disparaging remarks about Kerala are entirely baseless. It is ironic that someone who runs bulldozers over the homes of the poor in his own state is trying to preach to Kerala about social progress. He has simply become a mouthpiece for…— Pinarayi Vijayan (@pinarayivijayan) April 3, 2026 The Kerala Chief Minister also questioned Reddy’s criticism, noting that Telangana officials had recently studied Kerala’s digital land records system. He accused the Congress of hypocrisy and alleged that the attack was politically motivated, while defending his government’s record on welfare and development.Invest in journalism that makes a difference.
